Join us for the opening of THS's newest exhibit, Dreams & Dispossession: The Railway Comes to Tacoma, with special keynote speaker Thelda Burke.
The Tacoma we know today was shaped by its origins as a railway terminus for the Northern Pacific Railway. The railroad brought new people, industries, opportunities, and conflicts into the area. For good or ill, this event changed the lives of everyone living along Commencement Bay. Dreams & Dispossession explores the stories of the individuals directly affected by these changes.
The exhibit will open at 6:00 pm for viewing. At 6:30 pm, Ethelda Burke will speak on her father's experiences, Edwin Dorsey, as an African-American railroad porter in the 1940's. Refreshments will be provided.
The event is free or by donation. Donations can be made at the door. Limited Seating. For questions, call (253) 472-2238.
